Annual Daily Cal Homecoming Event Brings Together Alumni, Honors Alumnus of the Year

By Karlyn Barker ‘68

Former staff members of The Daily Californian gathered Homecoming Weekend to renew old friendships, celebrate the continued vigor of the student paper and pay tribute to an alumnus whose distinguished career spanned more than 30 years and several continents.

The Oct. 16 reception, held each fall at the Faculty Club and sponsored by the Daily Californian Alumni Association, drew ex-staffers from the Class of ’48 through the Class of ’04. Some alums arrived fresh from Memorial Stadium, where they watched Cal beat UCLA.

Jim Willwerth (’65, MJ ’70), honored as Alumnus of the Year, talked about the first time he walked into the Daily Cal newsroom and the huge influence that the student paper had on his life.

“There were all these people walking around with their hearts on their sleeves,” the author and former Time Magazine correspondent recalled. “They had great enthusiasm, and probably great naivete, but there was something about The Daily Californian that reinforced the feeling that you could make a difference.”

Willwerth, who parlayed a campus stringer job into a 34-year career covering major news stories in Southeast Asia, Central America and at home, said that feeling stayed with him. Whether covering wars, writing stories that helped free death row inmates, or chronicling the struggles of the mentally ill, he believed his mission was clear.

“I have never done journalism in my entire life where I wasn’t aiming to make a difference,” he said.

Willwerth, now teaching journalism at California Polytechnic State University in Pomona, held a seminar earlier in the day with Daily Cal staffers.

David Corvo (’72), an NBC executive and chairman of the board of directors for the Daily Californian Education Foundation, thanked reception attendees for their longtime financial support.

“A paper that nine years ago looked like it might not be able to print anymore is now winning a slew of awards,” he said, including the top prize for reporting among college dailies.

Alumni donations, he stressed, continue to help the paper be a model training ground for future journalists. Contributions have enabled the Daily Cal to upgrade its computer system, purchase modern cameras and new lenses and attend special journalism seminars.

(At its meeting last fall, the foundation board set a fundraising goal of $40,000 to replace the students’ ancient computer and phone systems and to complete an extended project to restore bound volumes of past editions and digitally archive the paper’s extensive photo collection.)

Also honored at the reception as “Friends of the Daily Cal” were Bob Parks and Dave Brown, owner and vice president, respectively, of Fricke-Parks Press, which began printing The Daily Californian 43 years ago.

Diane Rames, the paper’s general manager, praised the company officials as being “caring and forgiving” during the paper’s economic slumps, saying the firm played a big role in seeing the Daily Cal through good years and bad years. Parks, for his part, said he was appreciative because such recognition “comes very seldom to a commercial printer.”

The alumni association also presented $500 scholarships to two students, one from the editorial staff and one from the business staff, for outstanding work on The Daily Cal. Barry Kelly (’06), fall sports editor, was the editorial recipient; Sanjay Patel (’07), fall business manager, was the business staff recipient.

Coming Soon: A core of dedicated volunteers has recently completed work on a new Daily Californian Alumni Association directory. It lists the names and contact information for about 400 former Daily Cal staffers who have officially joined the DCAA by making a donation to the student paper. Another 800 alums in the DCAA database are also listed in the directory but we can’t vouch for whether our contact information for them is up-to-date since they are not DCAA members.

The directory is being mailed in late November to every Daily Cal alum for whom we think we have a valid address. If you would like a directory or a copy of our newsletter and don’t think you are in our database, e-mail alumni@dailycal.org and we will send you a copy. Please include your grad year, mailing address and other contact information. A donation of $50 to the Daily Californian Education Foundation entitles you to a lifetime membership in the alumni association—and goes to help supplement equipment upgrades, staff training and other needs of the student newspaper.

Watch this site for information on future activities being organized for Daily Cal alums. We hold an annual reunion every fall during Homecoming Weekend on October 16, 2004. In addition, several regional reunions—Sacramento, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Washington, D.C.—are in the works for 2004.

THE DAILY CALIFORNIAN EDUCATION FOUNDATION LOOKS FORWARD TO ANNUAL HOMECOMING WEEKEND RECEPTION

Berkeley - Daily Cal alumni and friends are invited to attend the Daily Cal Education Foundation's annual Homecoming Weekend reception, set for September 29, 2001 at the Faculty Club on campus. Reception co-coordinators and Daily Cal alumni Elisabeth Kersten (Director of the California Senate Office of Research) and Katrina Lee (Attorney at Nossaman, Guthner, Knox & Elliott LLP) expect that the remarkable wave of excitement and momentum that carried the April 2001 reception in San Francisco to exceptionally high attendance and contributions will make the upcoming Homecoming Weekend reception the most successful one ever of its kind. Bay Area Daily Cal Reception Enormously Successful, Both In Attendance And Contributions

SAN FRANCISCO, April 26 - On a beautiful April evening in the Bay Area, John Oppedahl (Daily Cal '67) , Publisher and CEO of The San Francisco Chronicle, spoke to more than 80 Daily Cal alumni and friends at a benefit reception for the Daily Cal.

Those in attendance reveled in complimentary drinks (including Hafner Vineyard Chardonnay donated by Daily Cal alum Dick Hafner) and hors d'oeuvres (dim sum and other delicacies) at the law office of Nossaman, Guthner, Knox & Elliott LLP. From the Nossaman office, located on the 34th floor of a building in downtown San Francisco, reception attendees enjoyed breathtaking views of the Bay as the sun set.

Oppedahl talked about recent improvements at the Daily Cal. He emphasized the need for financial donations to ensure the survival and the success of the independent, student-run Daily Cal.

Also, Oppedahl treated reception goers to a preview of the revolutionary redesign of the San Francisco Chronicle. The much-anticipated, newly redesigned Chronicle debuted three days later.

The speaking portion of the event began with welcoming remarks from University of California Regent William T. Bagley (also a partner at the Nossaman law firm). Regent Bagley was followed by Bart Green, the Senior Vice President for Marketing and Advertising at the San Francisco Chronicle.

People showed their support with their wallets as well as their attendance at the event. More than $5000 was raised as a result of the reception.

The Daily Cal Education Foundation Board and the Nossaman law firm sponsored the reception. Daily Cal alumnus ('94) and Foundation Board member Katrina Lee is an attorney at the Nossaman law firm. Lee and Foundation Board member Elisabeth Kersten co-coordinated the reception.
