Mission
The Daily Californian Endowment is designed to ensure the long-term viability of journalism education at the University of California, Berkeley. With an ambitious multi-million dollar goal over a several year campaign, the goals of the endowment will be:
o fully fund all student staff positions at The Daily Californian, including reporters, photographers, designers, copy editors, section editors and advertising, production and administrative staff;
o fund professional training programs for students in all aspects of reporting and media production; and
o guarantee the continued independence of the all-student newsroom of The Daily Californian. We seek to protect the Daily Cal’s 140-year legacy by guaranteeing that it will persist as the preeminent collegiate training institution for young journalists well into the 21st century.
About the Fund
The Daily Cal Endowment Campaign aims to provide long-term financial security to the Daily Cal, ensuring that the paper's mission to develop future leaders in journalism persists.
The Daily Californian Endowment is co-managed by The Daily Californian Education Foundation and the UC Berkeley Foundation. Gifts to the Endowment will be counted as contributions to the Campaign for Berkeley, and will be recognized by both organizations.
The funds will be invested by the professional team at the UC Berkeley Foundation, which regularly achieves far greater than market returns. The UC Berkeley Foundation will not charge the Daily Cal any management fees. While invested by the UC Berkeley Foundation, the Daily Californian Education Foundation shall have the sole discretion as to the disbursement of the earnings, under the parameters of the Endowment fund.
