Established in 1991, The Daily Californian Education Foundation works to raise money for student training in journalism and newspaper management at the newspaper. The Daily Californian Alumni Association is a unit of the Foundation. The Daily Cal is the only student newspaper in the nation to have a separate nonprofit foundation supporting its training goals.

	David Corvo '72 Chairman After serving as editor of the Daily Cal, David began his broadcast journalism career in 1975 at a CBS affiliate in Los Angeles. He went on to a long career as an executive at CBS News, where he served in various capacities, including overseeing the network's prime-time newsmagazine programs. After almost three years with Fox News Productions, he joined NBC News as vice president in 1995. In June 2001, he was appointed Executive Producer of the primetime newsmagazine Dateline NBC. He and his wife, writer Michele Willens, have two children and live in New York.
	Karlyn Barker '68 Alumni Association Co-Coordinator Karlyn majored in English Literature at UC Berkeley but spent most of her time in The Daily Californian newsroom. She was a reporter (covering campus protests), editorial page editor and then editor in chief. After leaving Cal, she received a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University and went on to work for UPI in both Washington and New York. She is now as assistant city editor on the Metro staff of The Washington Post, where she has worked as a reporter and editor for about 32 years, with a three-year break when she returned to California to work at the Orange County Register and the San Francisco Examiner.
	Robert Bazell BA '67, C. Phil. '70 Board member Robert Bazell is a 1967 Phi Beta Kappa graduate of UC Berkeley with a bachelor's degree in biochemistry. While at Berkeley, he wrote a science column and covered science-related news for the Daily Cal. During his career with NBC News, Bazell has reported on a wide range of subjects in the areas of science, technology and medicine, from throughout the United States and around the world. He has won numerous awards for his reports, including the prestigious George Foster Peabody Award for distinguished achievement and meritorious service in broadcasting. In addition to the Peabody Award, Bazell has been widely honored for his reporting. He was won two Emmys and was recognized for his extensive coverage of the AIDS epedemic that began in 1982, when only a few cases had been reported. After graduating from Berkeley, Bazell did graduate work in biology at the University of Sussex, England, in 1969, and was awarded a doctoral candidate degree in immunology at Berkeley. Bazell began his journalism career in 1971 as a writer for the News and Comment section of Science magazine. A year later, he moved to The New York Post as a reporter. In 1976, before he joined NBC News, he was briefly a reporter with WNBC-TV, the NBC station in New York. Bazell lives in New York with his wife, Margot Weinshel, and has three children, Rebecca, Josh and Stephanie.
	Joyce Chen '03 Board member Joyce majored in Mass Communications and spent four years working on the business side of The Daily Californian. She started as an Account Executive and then led the advertising sales team in her Junior and Senior years as the Advertising Business Manager. While at Cal, her other activities included serving as the Assistant Director (02-03) of the Cal-in-the Capital Washington D.C. work-abroad program and working as a Resident Assistant in the Residence Halls. Joyce currently works in Brand Management at the E&J Gallo Winery, the largest family owned winery in the nation.
	Dan Jung '00 Alumni Association Co-Coordinator Dan majored in biology at UC Berkeley and was on his way to become a scientist when The Daily Californian derailed his promising career in paleontology. He spent three years with the paper, first as a staff photographer, then photo editor, and finally as editor in chief. After graduation, Dan headed to New York City where he got a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University. He started working in Washington D.C. as a multimedia editor for the French news service, Agence France Presse and remained at that post for a little less than a year. Dan is currently working as a nation, politics, and world news producer for washingtonpost.com and lives in Arlington, Virginia.
	Elisabeth (Jonsson) Kersten '70 Board member Ms. Kersten has been director of the Senate Office of Research since 1983. Previously she was chief consultant to the Assembly Economic Development and New Technologies Committee and prior to that was deputy chief of staff to Speaker Willie L. Brown, Jr. She has extensive state budget experience, having served as a consultant to the Senate Finance Committee, the Assembly Ways and Means Committee and the Assembly Revenue and Taxation Committee. Her administrative experience includes serving as deputy director for the state Employment Development Department and the California Department of Consumer Affairs. She did her undergraduate work at UC Berkeley in economics and English and received her master's degree in public administration from the UC Berkeley School of Public Policy. She is married to an attorney in the Office of the Legislative Counsel and has three grown children.
	Erik Klavon '04 Board member Erik worked at the Daily Cal from the Fall of 1998 to the Summer of 2000 as the Manager of Information Systems. During this period he oversaw the replacement of almost every computer and electronic system in the newspaper thanks in great part to funding from the Foundation. He led the effort to design a new, entirely digital workflow for the Editorial, Photography, Production and Advertising departments using the Quark Publishing System. During his time at Berkeley, Erik has worked on numerous projects involving departments ranging from Computer Science to the Library. Erik graduated from Cal with a degree in Physics and Computer Science. Erik works for the Information Services and Technology and Division at Berkeley as a Senior Network Architect.
	Peter McCarty '77 Board member Peter worked on the Daily Cal while earning a degree in English at UC Berkeley. He is a Financial Representative for the Northwestern Mutual Financial Network (http://www.nmfn.com/petermccarty). He has 17 years experience in providing academic continuing education to journalists and has 26 years experience in fund-raising, development and management of nonprofit corporations. Peter, his wife, Charlotte, and sons John Thomas and James Peter live with their golden retriever, Independence, in the San Fernando Valley.
	John Oppedahl '67 Board Member While earning a degree in political science at UC Berkeley, John was editor of the Daily Cal. He went on to receive a master's in journalism at Columbia University. He began his journalism career at the San Francisco Examiner, and has also worked at the Detroit Free Press, the Dallas Times Herald, the Los Angeles Herald Examiner and the Arizona Republic in various capacities. Most recently, he was the publisher and CEO of the Hearst-owned San Francisco Chronicle. John lives in San Francisco, and has a son, Max, who lives in Phoenix.
	Joe Pichirallo '71 Board member After graduating from UC Berkeley with a degree in journalism and serving as editor of the Daily Cal, Joe began a reporting career that included stints at the San Francisco Examiner, the Miami Herald and the Washington Post, where he covered such stories as the Iran Contra Affair and the fall of Panamanian dictator Manuel Noriega. He left journalism in 1992 for a career in film. After starting at HBO, he helped launch Fox Searchlight Pictures, where he is vice president of production. He has been chairman of the board of the Daily Cal's parent company since 1993. He lives in Los Angeles with his wife, Mary Rainwater.
	Johnathan Rodgers Board member Johnathan Rodgers in March 2003 was named president and CEO of TV One, the new TV channel targeting adult African American and urban viewers that was launched January 19, 2004 by Comcast Corporation, the nations largest cable operator, and Radio One, the largest radio broadcaster primarily targeting African-American and urban listeners. TV One includes a broad mix of original and existing programming from all the entertainment genres, including scripted and unscripted dramas, sitcoms, game shows, movies, plays and news magazines. A portion of the programming will be devoted to public affairs and news documentaries. Previously, Rodgers was president of Discovery Networks, U.S. for six years, where he was responsible for all aspects of the domestic television division including programming, affiliate sales, advertising sales, marketing, research, business development and communications. Discovery Networks owns, operates and manages the Discovery Channel, TLC (The Learning Channel), Animal Planet, Travel Channel, Discovery Health Channel, Discovery en Espanol, Discovery Kids Channel, Discovery Science Channel, Discovery Home & Leisure Channel, Discovery Civilization Channel and Discovery Wings Channel. Prior to joining Discovery Communications, Inc. in 1996, Rodgers had a successful 20-year career at CBS, Inc., where he held a variety of executive positions including serving at the President of CBS highly profitable television stations division. During his career at CBS television, Rodgers also served as an award-winning news director and general manager and as an executive producer for CBS News. Rodgers began his professional career as a print journalist working as a writer-reporter for Sports Illustrated; he later worked for Newsweek magazine as an associate editor. Rodgers serves on the boards of the Childrens Defense Fund and the Peabody Awards and he is a trustee of the University of California (Berkeley) Foundation. He also serves on the Board of Directors of the Procter & Gamble Company. He received his undergraduate degree in journalistic studies from the University of California at Berkeley, and his masters in communications from Stanford University.

	Larry Wilson '77 Board member While earning a degree in English at UC Berkeley, Larry was the Daily Cal's rock music critic. Today he is editor of the Pasadena Star-News, a 42,000-circulation daily in Southern California. From 1987-1994 Larry was editorial page editor of the Star-News. Before that, he was business manager and assistant editor of the Pasadena Weekly. He has worked as a freelance journalist, a copy editor at Rolling Stone Press and as a technical writer in Saudi Arabia. In 1982, he received a master's degree from the American Graduate School of International Management. He lives in Pasadena with his wife, Phoebe Wall Wilson, an architect and city planner, and their daughter, Julia.
